Do you love exploring new places and connecting with people? Have a passion for guiding and inspiring young minds? Become a chaperone on one of our outbound trips and play a meaningful role in a young person’s journey.
Just like the delegates, you’ll stay with a local host family and take part in cultural activities curated by our international partners. It’s a chance to travel with purpose, build lifelong connections, and help shape unforgettable experiences for the next generation.
Position Overview
The heart of the chaperone role is supporting youth delegates as they navigate the adventure of traveling abroad. Delegates rely on their chaperone for everything from pre‑trip preparation and host family questions to unexpected challenges or medical concerns while overseas.
While building trust and rapport with the group is important, the chaperone’s primary responsibility is leadership. They step in confidently when issues arise, address behavior concerns when necessary, and model maturity, cultural respect, and adaptability throughout the journey.
Chaperones also play a hands-on role in the logistics of international travel—welcoming delegates at the airport, guiding them through travel procedures, monitoring their well‑being during the program, and helping them adjust to new cultures and environments. It’s a position that blends mentorship, problem‑solving, and cultural exploration into one meaningful experience.
The chaperone position is voluntary, but States’ 4-H will subsidize the program fee for chaperones (up to 75% depending on the country) as well as cover the cost of international and domestic airfare.
